The University’s very first WinterFest event has opened to fanfare at the Clayton campus, with a range of exciting festivities still to follow.

WinterFest was officially launched on Monday night by Oakleigh MP, Steve Dimopoulos. The launch was marked with an amazing light show, created by Master’s student Kit Webster. The light show will continue every night this week, which will see the Menzies Building awash with colour from 6 to 10.30pm through until Friday night when the night sky will be lit up with fireworks from 7pm.

Wednesday’s Mid-Winter Carnival is a free event and features a screening of Disney’s Frozen in The Chalet at 6pm and the Coen brothers’ Fargo at 8.30pm. There will be plenty of carnival attractions including fairy floss, popcorn, snow cones, a night market, stilt walkers, face painting, live ice sculpting and other extras. This will be a great evening to bring your children along to a fun-filled family evening.

On Thursday evening The Chalet will host Tommy Little and Nazeem Hussain for the Comedy Night and they will be sure to have you laughing out loud. Two student comedians, Naomi Higgins and David Rose, will open for Mr Hussain and Mr Little. There will be two shows, one starting at 5.30pm and the second at 8pm. Tickets are $20 for staff, $15 for students and $25 for community and are also available via the WinterFest website.

Soccer fans won’t want to miss Friday Night Freeze, a free event at Monash Sport hosting three of Melbourne Victory’s best. Among the guests are midfielder and Victory’s player of the season Fahid Ben Khalfallah. Also in attendance is winger Kosta Barbarouses and midfielder Rashid Mahazis. The players will be available to sign merchandise and interact with participants. They will also bring down their giant inflatable soccer target, allowing guests to have a kick. Other attractions include live sport, DJs, food trucks, a toboggan run, a snowball (dodgeball) competition, fireworks and more. You can also help to raise funds for Motor Neuron Disease (MND) by taking the Freeze MND Ice Slide challenge or make a donation to support the cause.

The Monash University Student Theatre (MUST) Container Festival runs throughout the week, offering an opportunity for the Monash community to engage with the creative arts culture. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will perform on Friday in the Robert Blackwood Hall.

Cross campus snow taxis are available for staff and students to and from WinterFest at Berwick, Caulfield, Parkville and Peninsula campuses.

Further information on the event, including tickets to the Comedy Night can be found on the WinterFest webpage. You can also join the Facebook events page to keep up to date with festival announcements and competition prizes.
