Google Maps come to Monash

Monash Maps
We’ve all seen bemused visitors attempting to locate a building or new students frantically trying to find a lecture theatre.
It can be just as difficult trying to find the best place to park when entering a sprawling campus.
Well, it’s now a whole lot easier thanks to Monash Maps, the innovative work of the Space Management Unit at Facilities and Services.
Google Maps' latest mapping technology provides access to a vast range of location-based information from all six Australian campuses. The result is an interactive, adaptable experience which is capable of providing a growing range of information and functionality.
They display all buildings, providing their names and numbers, can be used to locate lecture theatres and computer labs, and provide information on campus facilities, services and transport options. The team plan to continue to expand the functionality and number of features of Monash Maps over the coming months.
The project was made possible by the Space Management Unit working in conjunction with the New Media and Digital Marketing Unit, during the new ‘web presence’ rollout.
Space Management Unit manager Mike Scott said the challenge was to create a web-based mapping solution that provided that information to the public across all modern platforms. The obvious choice was Google Maps.
The project has been developed by Mike Scott and space data administrator, Peter Jolly.
“This is an exciting project to be involved in, as it brings something completely new to staff and students' online experience," Mr Jolly said.
"It provides a wayfinding tool where users can choose what they want. There is no limit to the amount of information we can provide. It drills down a lot deeper than many other universities’ maps.”
