Ending the Death Penalty in Asia: Reform Pathways, Comparative Perspectives, and Path Forward

10/26/2026 10:45 am 10/26/2026 07:30 pm Australia/Melbourne Ending the Death Penalty in Asia: Reform Pathways, Comparative Perspectives, and Path Forward

What does the future of the death penalty look like in the Asia-Pacific?

The Asia-Pacific region is home to the highest number of countries retaining the death penalty, including some of the world's most actively executing states. Over 40 per cent of persons on death row globally are in Asia.

Far from receding, the death penalty remains deeply entrenched across the region, and much of the advocacy challenging its use is reactive, focused on preventing imminent executions or resisting legislative moves to expand its scope.

This conference unites regional experts to confront entrenched systems and chart real pathways towards abolition. With Malaysia's Parliament reviewing the death penalty in 2026, the moment for regional action and reform is now.
