Research Seminar Series
“New Audiences for Classical Music”? Soundtracks and soundtrack concerts as a gateway to the orchestra
Presented by Professor Dan Golding, Monash University
Students, staff and the general public are welcome to attend this FREE event. (Registration not required).
Abstract
Today, concerts of music written for the screen are now common practice in the yearly programming of local and international symphony orchestras, as well as classical music broadcasting and recordings. However, the presence of the soundtrack in these established worlds can be complicated. Are they a commercial reality? A gateway for new audiences? Yet there is an urgent value to the soundtrack when taken on its own terms. In this research seminar, I aim to consider what it means for the soundtrack, often uncritically assumed to be ‘subordinated, contingent, unheard,’ to be ‘placed at the forefront of the listener’s attention’ (Lehmen, 2018).
Bio
Dan Golding is Professor of Media at Monash University, host of Screen Sounds for ABC Classic, composer for videogames like Untitled Goose Game, and co-host of the Art of the Score concert series.
