The Invisible Invasion: Tackling Microplastics for a cleaner future

06/17/2026 08:00 pm 06/17/2026 09:00 pm Australia/Melbourne The Invisible Invasion: Tackling Microplastics for a cleaner future

Microplastics are everywhere! We just don't know how much of it is a threat to us.

Microplastic pollution is this generation’s greatest environmental challenge? These tiny plastic particles are often too small to see, yet they are widespread in our oceans, waterways and ecosystems. Research has shown that every ten-fold decrease in particle size can reveal up to one hundred times more microplastics in environments. Because of their size, they can move through the environment and may even enter living cells.

In this webinar, Dr Khay Fong will share how she and her research team are using new technology to better detect and measure microplastics, helping us understand the true scale of this hidden problem. Guided by the belief that “you can’t solve what you can’t see,” Dr Khay Fong will talk about how her team uses cutting-edge technology and AI to detect and map tiny plastic particles often missed by traditional methods.

Their work is helping reveal the true scale of pollution in environments such as the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and providing valuable data for scientists and environmental advocates.

This research is creating smarter ways to track pollution and support solutions for a cleaner future.
