Struan Postgraduate Centre facilities and services

Allocated Student Office Space

In this first year of operation, the centre is not planning on allocating individual office space. However, if you have a need for office space please email or telephone extn 44339 to discuss options.

Computers

A number of PC computers will be available for general use in Room103. A wireless network operates within the Centre on all levels.

Emergency Evacuation

Emergency evacuation procedures are displayed next to the fire control panel in the entrance hallway.

Exits

Please familiarise yourself when entering the building of the exit signs.

Kitchen

A well equipped kitchen is located at the end of the hallway towards the back of Struan. The kitchen is equipped with cooking facilities, microwave, jug and fridge. Fresh filtered water, tea, coffee and milk are also available. There is an expectation that students using the kitchen facilities will leave them clean and tidy.

Lockers

A limited number of lockers, located in Room S1.03, are available to all Centre users. You can request a locker by emailing or phone extn 44339.

Photocopying

There are no photocopying facilities in the centre. If you need to use a photocopier you will need to visit your department or the Library.

Registration and Security Access

The facilities and services at the Struan Postgraduate Centre are available to all currently enrolled Monash postgraduate (coursework and research) and honours students.

If you wish to use the centre you must complete a centre registration form and the application must be approved by the Campus Manager. After hours access is an option, please see details listed under Swipe Card Access.

Safety and Security

The campus has a 24 hour security presence.  If you have any safety or security concerns please contact extn 44318 directly.  Should you require an after hours escort from the centre to your vehicle or around campus please contact extn 44318.

Seminar/Meeting Room

PG centre student lounge

A seminar/meeting room (RS1.15), capable of seating up to 20 people, in the basement is available for meetings and seminars. If you would like to use this room please make a booking by emailing Tanya O'Brien or  telephone extn 44339 during office hours.

Student Lounge

The student lounge is a place for both informal social gatherings and formal presentations or DVD replays for small groups.  Students have access to a plasma screen, which can also be connected to a computer, and DVD player and direct access to the adjacent kitchen facilities.

Smoking

As with all university buildings, the non-smoking rule must be respected at all times. Smoking outside the building in the vicinity of the exits is also prohibited under the university’s occupational health and safety code.

Swipe Card Access – during business hours and after hours

The Centre’s entry and exit door at the front of the building is open between 7.30 am and 5.30 pm. User will, however, need swipe card access during these hours to enter Room S1.03, the general access study area.

If you wish to use the facilities outside normal business hours you will also need to request after hours access.

Both types of access can be applied for by completing Section B on the Registration Form.  

Access for both of the above is provided by the Proximity card system. Please ensure that your ID card is a proximity card.  Check the bottom left hand corner of the back of your ID card for the words ‘Proximity Card’. If this does not appear on your card you will be required to attend the Student Services Centre in C Building to get a new issue.

For your safety and the safety of your fellow students we ask that you use your card access rights responsibly. All users of the centre have the right to feel safe and secure.

Telephones

The telephones in the centre have limited access.  You may use them to dial internal numbers, emergency 000, University emergency 333 and some 1300 numbers linked to popular phone cards.

Toilets

Toilet facilities are available towards the end of the hallway.

Video Surveillance

In the interest of your safety, the building has video surveillance.

Reminders

To help ensure that the Centre is a pleasant place to study, please:

  • confine discussions to the general public areas, eg the lounge and the meeting room
  • please use the bins provided for litter and recycling, and
  • keep the kitchens gleaming!
