Hockey on the Peninsula gets a boost

Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs, the Honourable James Merlino MP, visited the Peninsula campus recently to officially open the hockey pavilion.

The pavilion provides the "icing on the cake" for the hockey precinct at the campus, which is home to the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula Hockey clubs and the Peninsula Women's Hockey Association.

The new facility complements the $1.1 million synthetic hockey pitch which was completed in early 2002 with funding from Frankston City Council, Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, Sports and Recreation Victoria, Monash University, MONSU and the local hockey clubs.

The cooperation that was fostered to develop the pitch was again sought for the construction of the $1.2 million pavilion with significant financial contributions provided by Frankston City Council ($475,000), Sport and Recreation Victoria ($175,000), Monash University ($100,000) and Mornington Peninsula Shire Council ($50,000). Due to a shortfall in funding, a loan of $225,000 was taken out through the university to finish construction.

In addition to the construction costs, a further $200,000 was awarded through DEST's Capital Development Program grant to finalise the fit out, which includes a kitchen.canteen area, change rooms, club rooms that also double as teaching space, and a meeting space.

Minister Merlino congratulated the parties involved on the cooperation that was extended in developing the whole hockey centre and noted the value of community facilities that foster sport and active lifestyles.

10,000 steps challenge takes off

Staff at the Peninsula campus enjoyed morning tea at the commencement of the 10,000 steps challenge.

The race for the title of 10,000 steps champions has started with eight Peninsula teams vying for the position.

This year's teams will undertake a virtual walk visiting all Monash campuses starting at Berwick then to Peninsula, Caulfield, Alfred, Parkville, Gippsland, South Africa and Malaysia and finishing at the Clayton campus on Thursday 16 October.

Campus Cruisers, last year's campus winners, are again looking at taking out the coveted prize to be first across the line.

The 2008 challenge was launched on Monday with staff at all campuses getting together for morning tea and discussing tactics about getting to the finish line first. There are a range of great prizes to be won including Coles Myer vouchers, a physio pack and a weekend away at the snow.

At the completion of the challenge all participants are invited to attend a wrap up celebration at Monash Sport Clayton on Tuesday, 21 October at 12 noon and hear from Celebrity Overhaul's Dr John Tickell. Dr Tickell has has spent the last 25 years researching the health, well-being and longevity patterns of people around the world.

The aim of the campus testimonials is to provide prospective students with an accurate idea about what it is like to be a student at the campus and the benefits of studying at a smaller campus like Peninsula.

A further four student testimonials will be uploaded to the web in the near future at http://www.monash.edu.au/campuses/peninsula/news/profiles/students.html
