Sandy works for tunnelling ease

Ta Seymour won a competition to name the $5 million tunnel boring machine.

The local community is embracing the work being undertaken in Peninsula campus's car park with local school children and a range of other community people attending the recent naming of the tunnel boring machine.

Pipelines Alliance, the organisation undertaking the Frankston Drainage Improvement Project, enlisted some help from Frankston Primary School student Ta Seymour to officially name the $5 million tunnelling machine ‘Sandy' - named because she thought that's the type of ground conditions the machine would likely encounter so close to the beach.

Phil Corluka, Pipelines Alliance Program Director, said a well attended naming event showed the local community had embraced the project and the $41.2 million project that will alleviate flooding in Frankston during heavy rain.

Sandy will commence work in the 12 metre shaft that has been the basis of the campus works to date in early January 2010 undertaking a 1.5 kilometres underground journey through to Kananook Creek.

The project includes works that benefit the environment by allowing for flows to help top up Beauty Park Lake to attract and retain bird and marine life, as well as providing a significant water saving initiative with Monash University.

The works are part of Stage 1 of the Frankston Drainage Improvement Project which aims to reduce the risks associated with flooding in Frankston, in the case of heavy rain or major wet weather. Work is scheduled to be complete by October 2010 with the new system being commissioned in early 2011.

On conclusion of Pipelines Alliances' work, Facilities and Services will take over the site to install four, 45,000 litre tanks that will capture excess storm water and provide a sustainable, all-year round, water supply for the campus grounds via the campus's existing irrigation system.

Christmas giving tree

Christmas giving tree

This year, Health Wellbeing and Development has a real Christmas tree in their front foyer.

Each year the Community Support and Information Service in Frankston collects gifts for distribution to families in the Frankston area who are struggling to purchase gifts for their children. HWD have agreed to assist this cause and are seeking gifts for boys and girls up to 18 years of age. Gifts for 15 to 18 year olds are always needed.

Please help us support those who are less fortunate in the Frankston area by placing an unwrapped gift under the tree. The tree will be in place until 22 December 2009.
