The year in review
Dear Colleagues,
2005 has been a year of many positive
developments for Peninsula campus.
-
New degree programs in Physiotherapy,
Occupational Therapy and Health Science/ Social Work commencing in 2006
will see about 150 extra new students on campus. Students who have been
undertaking the Diploma of Health Sciences this year will commence
second year of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy courses in 2006.
Congratulations to the all the staff involved in developing these
courses.
-
Other new courses to the campus in 2006
include the Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation, the Bachelor of
Psychology (with Honours) and the Bachelor of Psychology and Business.
-
The Centre for Ambulance and Paramedic
Studies launched their Trauma
Simulation complex, which received $20,000 worth of funding from the
RACV. This centre provides first rate
facilities for the education of students in emergency health.
-
Work is continuing with Frankston City
Council, Peninsula Health, Chisholm TAFE and local politicians to
establish a Frankston
Regional Aquatic Health and Wellness Centre at Peninsula. Studies
have been undertaken and applications for funding support are being
sought from various sources. While community and university feeling
about the development is positive this is a longer term project that
would not be expected to commence until 2007/08
-
The campus worked closely with Dromana and
Monterey Secondary Colleges as part of the
Schools Access
Monash Program, which aims to improve tertiary transition rates in
the region. Thanks to all the staff who participated in school or campus
visits for these students. The program continues in 2006.
-
The appointment of several key staff to
senior positions has added to the campus’s research profile.
Professor Carol Morse
has been appointed Director, Health and Wellbeing Research and Associate
Professor Phillip Payne has recently been appointed Associate Professor
in Sport and Outdoor Recreation.
-
Successful research outcomes across the
campus including:
-
a collaborative ARC Linkage Grant being
awarded to Dr Jenny
Newton and
Glenice Ives in Nursing.
-
Professor
Margaret O’Connor also from Nursing received research funding
from Veterans Affairs as well as being awarded an Australia Day
Honours Award in February in recognition of her contribution to the
development and establishment of palliative care services in
Victoria.
-
Dr Asad Khan
from IT was part of a successful consortium that received more than
$3.2 million in DEST funding.
-
The
Peninsula Education Precinct involving Monash University, Chisholm
TAFE, Frankston High School, Monterey Secondary College, Frankston
Mornington Peninsula LLEN and the local councils again worked well in
developing improved pathways and educational outcomes for young people
in the region. The VCE revision lecture series was a huge success for
the second year in a row with lectures held both mid year and at the end
of the year with over 1000 subject enrolments.
-
B Building
has undergone major refurbishment to accommodate some of these changes,
while the A Plaza has continued to develop, albeit slowly.
It is a credit to the all staff on campus for their enthusiasm during the
year in helping to achieve these outcomes. I realise that as well as the
campus initiatives much has been happening in terms of development in all
campus areas and I congratulate everyone for their continued work in making
Peninsula a vibrant, successful campus.
Wishing everyone the best for the university break and I look forward to
working with you again in 2006.
Professor Phillip Steele

Cleaners clips

Elena and her cleaning staff are to be congratulated on a job well done in
bringing the floors and walls in Nursing up to scratch. The standard of
cleanliness in the ground floor labs and lecture rooms would put any
hospital to shame. Well done to Elena and her staff and a big thank you for
the effort you have put in. |
