Monash Peninsula Supports Local High Achievers

Wednesday the 5th of March saw 56 students from 14 Bayside and Peninsula secondary schools visit Monash Peninsula for the inaugural Peninsula Education Precinct High Achievers Breakfast. The High Achievers Program, which is coordinated by Campus Management at Peninsula, entered its second year in 2008 after a successful pilot with a select group of Peninsula schools in 2007. The program has now been opened up to all schools in the region.

The half-day program, held in the campus's Seahorse Tavern, included an interactive presentation by motivational speaker, Christopher Shen, Western Bulldogs tackling coach and Australian wrestling representative (and Monash Alumnus!).

Students also had an opportunity to explore their personal learning styles and gain tips for maximising memory and coping with stress. The program aims to equip participants with tools and knowledge to help them throughout their VCE. Presenters also included Travis Smith, Assistant Principal of Frankston High School and Elanie Coyne, Counsellor with Monashâ's Health, Wellbeing and Development unit.

The Peninsula Educational Precinct was established to provide enhanced educational opportunities for students in the southern and south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, the Frankston region and the Mornington Peninsula. Precinct partners, which include Monash Peninsula, Chisholm TAFE Frankston, local schools and councils, collaborate closely to break down institutional and sectoral barriers.

"With so many schools involved we feel that we are having a considerable impact on a large number of local students and schools. We hope that we are adding value for the schools that already have a high achievers' program and providing ideas for schools that do not, for the possible development of their own program." says Sue Webb, Peninsula Campus Manager.

The next High Achievers event will take place in July this year.

Farewell Carol and Elena

Professor Carol Morse bid farewell to Peninsula at the end of March after two and a half years at the campus in the role of Director Health and Wellbeing Research.

Professor Morse's research expertise focused on health and wellbeing in a range of demographics including the elderly, different cultural groups, women and new parents. She will now undertake freelance consulting and continue in her private practice of Psychotherapy and Counselling on the Peninsula, based at Mt Martha and Mornington.

Peninsula also said goodbye recently to campus cleaning supervisor Elena Jimenez. Elena has been working at Peninsula for '20 beautiful years - its my second home' she says.

Elena

Elena kept the cleaning to a high standard for a long time. She takes her work personally and tries to achieve 100% all the time' says Michael Mirra from Facilities and Services.

Elena has many fond memories of long-time colleagues including Fred Lucas, her first supervisor. 'He gave me a lot of encouragement to become a supervisor and to keep on at Monash. I love my Monash.'

After working the wee hours for so long, Elena’s first post-work luxury will be sleeping through the night and taking only her second break in two decades - enjoy Elena!

Hands-On Orientation

During Orientation week, new students at the Faculty of Education had the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities in the Science laboratory exploring various 'water' activities. The activity was facilitated by Mr John Gipps, Professional Officer with the Faculty of Education.

Students from both the postgraduate and undergraduate degrees were invited to attend the orientation activity which was funded by the Central Orientation unit.

Some of the experiments included making water wetter, using mallets to melt ice and testing pH and salinity.

Being able to familiarise themselves with the physical environment of the science laboratory and get a hands on start to primary science was greatly appreciated by students.

Kym Berchtenbreiter, a Graduate Diploma of Primary Education student said 'The exercises showed me that I will need to do my homework prior to taking any classes for a science project! I am most appreciative of the opportunity given to us'.
