Research grant success

Asthma Education in regional Victoria

The Department of Community Emergency Health and Paramedic Practice at the Peninsula campus has received a national grant to develop, distribute and evaluate an education package related to ambulance use and the '000' process in asthma cases.

$177k to diversify clinical training

Ambulance paramedic scenario   The Department of Human Services has awarded $177,000 to staff at Monash Peninsula to explore ways of supporting the increasing demand for clinical places in Victorian health services.
 

Baby Boomers -- Caring for the future

A $33,000 grant from Department of Health and Ageing to explore "Information and service needs of the ‘baby-boom’ generation as carers of persons with dementia, and as future receivers of care" has been awarded to Dr Chris King in conjunction with Professor Carol Morse and staff from Peninsula Health and Southern Health.

ARC Grant to explore smoke free policies

Sonja Petrovic-Lazarevic   Associate Professor Sonja Petrovic-Lazarevic, from the Faculty of Business and Economics at the Peninsula campus, has been awarded an ARC Linkage Grant of $175,640 to explore 'Maximising the effectiveness of public health policies: The case of the smoke-free policies'. 

As chief investigator A/Prof Petrovic-Lazarevic will work with Monash colleagues A/Prof Chung-Hsing Yeh and Mrs Susan Bedingfield from the Clayton School of Information Technology and Dr Ken Coghill, also from the Faculty of Business and Economics as well as Dr Ron Borland from the project's industry partner The Cancer Council of Victoria, Health Centre for Tobacco Control.

The three year project will develop a methodology for maximising the effectiveness of public health policies, focusing on tobacco control. It will build models, derived from a unique combination of theory, survey data and expert judgements, to explain the different effects of tobacco control policies in different countries. The models will then be tested to see how well they predict outcomes within and across national cultures.

Federal grants  supporting education success

The Faculty of Education at the Peninsula campus has received two grants as part of the Federal Government's Australian School Innovation in Science Technology and Mathematics program to develop projects in local schools.

New Appointments

Appointments boost campus research potential

Dr Chris King and Dr Rosalind Lau have recently been appointed to research positions at Monash Peninsula. Both will work with Professor Carol Morse to develop research opportunities at the Peninsula campus and support collaborative research projects between campuses and faculties as well as within the community.

 Winter Research Forum

A highly successful Winter Research Forum was held at Morningstar Estate in Mornington on 18 July focussing on Healthy Ageing, Successful Living. Participants from Berwick, Caulfield, Clayton, Gippsland and Peninsula campuses joined a broad range of community and health professional representatives.

 Nursing Professor appointed to ethics committee

Professor Margaret O'Connor   Professor Margaret O'Connor from the School of Nursing and Midwifery has been appointed to the National Health and Medical Research Committee's Australian Health Ethics Committee (AHEC). Professor O'Connor is the first nurse to be appointed to to this prestigious role and brings her experience in nursing/allied health practices to the committee.

 50 new places for mental health nursing at Peninsula

Bruce Billson and Glenice Ives   The Peninsula campus has recently secured 50 new Commonwealth Supported Places to be directed to mental health education in the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

 

 Baby Boomers wanted

Are you a baby boomer (born between 1946 and 1966) living in the Mornington Peninsula region? Then your input is needed for a joint research project looking at how to best meet the future care needs of this generation.

 Gala Dinner supports Vivian Bullwinkel Memorial Fund

Vivian Bullwinkel   More than 400 people enjoyed an evening of entertainment, fine food and wine at a gala dinner in honour of Australian World War II heroin Vivian Bullwinkel AO, MBE, and to support a memorial fund established in her honour.

 

 Campus research seminars

There are a further two research seminars to be held this year and a program for 2007 is already being developed. Anyone who would like to contribute to the seminars in 2007 should contact Carol Morse.
