Working with Children Check and Registration to Work with Vulnerable People

Students and staff at Monash University may be required to complete background checks before engaging with children or vulnerable individuals. This page outlines the process for obtaining a Working with Children Check (WWCC) in Victoria.

Access Monash Mentors and Mentor Leaders working with students in Tasmania, may also require a Registration to Work with Vulnerable People.

Use this resource to ensure you meet all legal requirements and are prepared to participate safely and responsibly in community and educational programs.

Students who have been accepted as student leaders in the Peer Mentoring, Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)*, or Access Monash Mentoring programs must hold a valid Volunteer or Employee Working With Children Check.

*PASS Leaders who work in a postgraduate unit do not require a WWCC.

How to apply for a Employee or Volunteer WWCC

Apply and verify your ID online

  1. Visit the Service Victoria website.
  2. Complete the online application form.
  3. Verify your identity using two valid identity documents as outlined on the Applying for a Working with Children Check webpage through Service Victoria.
  4. After completing your online WWCC application, you will receive an email with a barcode and instructions to finalise your applications in-person at a participating Australia Post outlet in Victoria. You must be physically present in Victoria to complete this process. Note: you may need to have your photo taken at Australia post for your Working With Children Check, there is no fee for your photo for either the Volunteer or Employee check. Apply online and verify your ID in-person

If you don't have the required documents to complete an online verification, you must verify your identity in-person.

  1. Complete the online application form.
  2. Visit an Australia Post outlet with three original proof of identity documents (e.g. passport, visa, Medicare card, etc.).
  3. Lodge your application at an Australia Post outlet. They will take your photo for you, at no charge to you as it is part of the process. For further details, please refer to the Victorian Government In-Person applications for Working with Children Checks webpage. You will not need to pay a fee for a volunteer check. You must be physically present in Victoria to complete this process.

Essential Information

All student leaders must provide their WWCC number to their relevant Access, Inclusion and Success contact by the deadline specified in the application information or form. Unfortunately you will not be able to commence being a student leader without providing your WWCC number.

Access Monash Mentors and Mentor Leaders working with secondary school students who are located in Tasmania will need to apply for a Registration to Work with Vulnerable People, which is similar to Victoria’s Working With Children Check, but is specifically required in the state of Tasmania.
