Advances in research on ocean temperature and coral bleaching
Monash University researchers are supporting marine conservation and climate action by advancing the understanding of ocean temperatures and climate variability, as well as the factors causing coral bleaching:
- Dr Ariaan Purich and an international team used a 627-year coral record from Fiji to study the impact of human-caused climate change on Pacific Ocean temperatures, emphasising the need to limit global warming to 1.5ºC.
- PhD candidate Lara Richards led a study identifying wind patterns as a key factor in coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef, highlighting the importance of local meteorological conditions over El Niño events.
