Driving SDGs: Monash's Global and Local Efforts for Transformation

Monash University, through the Monash Sustainable Development Institute, is actively advancing the SDGs by engaging in international dialogues and publishing research on transformative localisation:

  • Representatives attended the UN Summit of the Future to discuss restructuring systems for SDG implementation, resulting in the Pact for the Future, which focuses on reforming finance, enhancing peace, and leveraging innovation.
  • Researchers at the Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI), including Associate Professor Shirin Malekpour and Dr Cameron Allen, have published several high-profile studies on the importance of localisation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The work emphasises the need for transformative localisation, which involves prioritising SDGs with the greatest potential gains and embracing diverse local interests.

Their research, including publications in Nature Sustainability and Nature Communications, outlines six critical transformations necessary for achieving the SDGs, such as sustainable economies and energy decarbonization. The studies highlight the role of governments, businesses, and communities in driving these transformations and the importance of science and research in accelerating progress.
