Digital Inclusion at Monash

Digital Inclusion team

The Digital Inclusion team is committed to ensuring that web experiences at Monash are accessible to everyone; we believe that digital accessibility is essential to providing a fair and equitable experience for all users. By prioritising inclusive design and development practices, we aim to create products that serve as many people as possible.

What we do

Our mission is to ensure that our digital products — websites, PDF documents, mobile apps, and online services — are inclusive and accessible. We recognise that mismatched interactions can create barriers and exclusion in digital space, so we try to help eliminate the barriers and improve usability to allow all our users to enjoy and benefit from their web experiences.

Our vision is to become a leader in inclusive design thinking by prioritising accessibility in our designs where our success stems from the deep understanding, capability, awareness, and collaboration of Monash staff, enabling us to deliver world-class services to a diverse range of users.

Our approach

Our team works collaboratively across diverse teams and departments within Monash, to implement and uphold web accessibility standards, focusing on making our digital content accessible to people using assistive technologies, as well as those with varying physical, sensory, or cognitive abilities.

To achieve our vision, we take a proactive and user-centred approach to web accessibility. By conducting user testing with people who have diverse needs, and staying up to date with the latest accessibility research, we ensure that our products are continuously evolving to meet the highest standards of inclusivity.

Our team works closely with designers, developers and product managers to embed accessibility from the very start of every project to:

  • Advocate for user-centred design, where the diverse needs of our entire audience, including people with disabilities, are prioritised in every phase of product development.
  • Implement best practices for web accessibility (WCAG, ARIA, and other standards). We practice Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 level AA standards to ensure our digital content is accessible.
  • Conduct regular accessibility audits. Testing, identifying and resolving barriers for users with disabilities.
  • Provide support and resources to various teams across Monash that need assistance with AX and UX design.
  • Continuously improve the accessibility of our websites, apps, and other digital platforms within the university.

In Digital Inclusion, accessibility is not just an initiative; it’s part of our core values and the foundation of our commitment to creating better, more inclusive products and services for everyone.
