Monash University is delighted to announce a significant strengthening of its partnership with the University of Padua (UNIPD) following a high-level delegation visit to Monash University, Clayton, on 19 May 2025. The visit marked an important moment in the ongoing collaboration between the two institutions. It included the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding and a Multi-Project Framework Agreement.
The UNIPD delegation's visit underscored both universities' commitment to advancing research, education, and graduate research training globally. The day's agenda showcased successful collaborative projects and laid the groundwork for exciting future initiatives.
A highlight of the visit was the inaugural Monash Europe Community of Practice event, where Monash academics, including Dr Nicola Charwat and Professor Joseph Nicolazzo, and Professor Mara Thiene from UNIPD, presented on impactful collaborations between the two institutions. The event was opened by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) and Senior Vice-President, Professor Craig Jeffrey, who shared his enthusiasm and support for the partnership between the University of Padua, founded in 1222, one of the world's oldest research-intensive universities and Monash University. The academic presentations demonstrated the strength of the existing partnership, which has seen more than 35 collaborative projects across numerous disciplines since 2022.
The newly signed Multi-Project Framework Agreement signifies a commitment to long-term collaboration, opening doors for even greater opportunities. This includes exploring shared graduate research training programs.
"Our partnership with the University of Padua is an integral part of Monash University's Europe engagement strategy," said Professor Cecilia Hewlett, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Europe). "This visit has reinforced our existing ties and ignited new avenues for collaboration in research, education, and graduate research training. We look forward to developing shared graduate research training programs and exploring joint funding opportunities, including Horizon Europe, that will benefit our students and academic staff alike."
During their visit, the UNIPD delegation had the opportunity to tour some of the research platforms and facilities at Monash University, Clayton. Meetings with Monash faculties further facilitated discussions on specific areas of mutual interest and potential future joint initiatives.
The Monash-UNIPD partnership exemplifies the benefits of international collaboration with like-minded institutions, fostering an environment where complementary expertise converges to drive innovation and address complex global issues. Both universities are dedicated to expanding this strategic alliance, creating further opportunities for staff and student mobility, and delivering impactful outcomes in research and education over the coming years.
