Exchange of Best Practices in Additive Manufacturing for Industry

Unlike traditional subtractive methods, which remove material to form a part, AM is a process that creates components by building them layer by layer from digital models by addition of material. This additive technique enables complex geometries, waste reduction, and accelerates product development. This technology is transforming industries such as aerospace, automotive, and healthcare by enabling innovative designs and high-performance parts.

This professional services initiative is led by Yang Tian, Platform Manager in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Monash University, and Alex Attridge, Chief Engineer at the Centre for Imaging, Metrology and Additive Technologies, WMG at the University of Warwick. Both centres run state-of-the-art facilities that support cutting-edge research and industry collaboration. The project aims to benchmark processes across the two organisations, identify best practices, and learn from each other to optimise quality and efficiency.

Areas of focus include quality management systems, service provision, staffing structures, and career development pathways, as well as the role these centres play in enabling internationally recognised research. Beyond operational improvements, the project will also explore how complementary technical fields such as inspection and verification and material science, can be better integrated into additive manufacturing workflows.

The outcome will be more than just improved processes. By creating strong links between WMG and MCAM, the initiative will establish mechanisms for knowledge transfer, foster long-term collaboration, and lay the groundwork for future joint projects. Ultimately, this partnership strengthens both institutions and supports the advancement of additive manufacturing on a global scale.
