Professor Euan Wallace AM commences as Executive Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and Vice-President (Health) on 2 November 2026.
Monash University has announced the appointment of Professor Euan Wallace AM as Monash’s new Executive Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and Vice-President (Health), following an extensive global search. Professor Wallace will commence his new role at Monash on 2 November 2026.
Professor Wallace has had a long and distinguished association with Monash University, having first joined as a Senior Lecturer in 1997 before serving as the Carl Wood Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from 2013 to 2020. During his tenure, he launched the Ritchie Centre within the Monash Institute of Medical Research in 2010 and served as its Director until 2013.
In May 2025, Professor Wallace returned to Monash as Professor in the faculty before being appointed to his current position as Dean, Sub-Faculty of Clinical and Molecular Medicine in January 2026. Since then, Professor Wallace has also served as Chief Research and Innovation Officer at Monash Health. His association with Monash Health similarly began in 1997, first as a consultant obstetrician in maternal-fetal medicine and then as Director, Women’s and Newborn Services in 2006. He held this position until 2016 when he was appointed the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of Safer Care Victoria, the state’s agency for healthcare quality and safety.
A respected healthcare leader, Professor Wallace served as the Secretary of the Victorian Department of Health from 2020 until 2025, overseeing the state’s health portfolio and leading Victoria’s health response to the COVID-19 pandemic from 2021. As Secretary, he led several system-wide health initiatives, including Victoria’s virtual emergency department, the state’s first public IVF program, and reforms in mental health and planned surgery. In 2017, Professor Wallace founded Safer Care Victoria, the state’s first agency for clinical quality and safety, and served as its Chief Executive until 2020.
A leading researcher in fetal development, maternal health, stem cell biology and patient safety, Professor Wallace has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and held competitive national research funding for more than 20 years. Seven patents have been developed from his research, two of which were licensed to industry partners.
In recognition of his contributions to women’s health and education, Professor Wallace was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2013, and received a Distinguished Service Medal from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2018. He was also conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by Monash University in 2023 for his services to women’s health and Victoria’s healthcare system.
