Leadership training opens doors to health reform

Chinese health managers visiting Monash

Chinese health managers are attending leadership courses at Monash.

Monash is hosting 24 Chinese health managers who are attending a leadership-training program at the School of Primary Health Care.

The program aims to assist the managers in the health reforms being undertaken by the Chinese government.

Monash has provided training over the past six years to participants from Shenzhen, a city of 15 million people in Guangdong province, next to Hong Kong.

Recently the University signed a new five-year agreement with the Shenzhen government to extend its involvement in the training. Twenty training groups will attend Monash from 2015 to 2019.

Program coordinator Dr Hui Yang said: "This is a very popular program because it meets the needs of the Shenzhen government and the career aspirations of the participants."

The program is also gaining popularity in other Chinese provinces and Dr Yang said some were represented in this cohort.

“The program is expanding into other provinces because it now has an excellent and growing reputation,” Dr Yang said.

The participants will stay at Monash for three weeks before returning to China.

Professor Shane Thomas, Associate President for International Academic Development, said: "The career outcomes for those attending this program are excellent, with many assuming senior leadership positions in Shenzhen and China more broadly."
