Golfing talent of the future
Thomas Horan
Around the same time Adam Scott became the first Australian to win the US Masters, a Monash student marked himself as a golfing talent of the future.
Second year Bachelor of Science student, Thomas Horan, is among the top 10 golfers in the Australian Amateur rankings.
Thomas has had a stellar start to the year after winning the prestigious NSW Medal, an open age national ranking event held in Sydney at the Bonnie Doon and The Coast Golf courses.
“This year there were over 200 players competing in the competition so I was quite happy when I won because it was my first win in a national event,” Thomas said.
“I had a poor tournament the week before so I was really pleased with the result.”
Since winning the NSW Medal, Thomas has been busy competing in the Riversdale golf course and the South Australia classic, also national events, where he placed fourth in both.
More recently he has returned from representing Victoria at the Interstate series in Tasmania where his team came fourth.
Thomas is earmarked to join Monash’s Enhanced Elite Athlete Friendly Program, set up by Monash Professorial Fellow and retired Australian tennis player Professor Paul McNamee, and manages to balance study with training every day, whether it is at the golf course or at the gym.
Professor McNamee said on the back of a number of standout performances nationally Thomas “has made amazing progress up the golfing rankings this year”.
“Certainly Adam Scott's historic win at the Masters will provide inspiration for young guys like Tom, who's doing a great job balancing his golf with study at Monash".
He first started playing when he was 11 through a school program and said what drives him is his love of the game.
“I love the challenge of the game, every day is different - you can never perfect it, you can always strive to improve and do better.”
