Monash and Weill Cornell Medicine join forces to drive global health research innovation

Monash University is proud to collaborate with Weill Cornell Medicine, Cornell University’s academic medical institution, to tackle new research projects including mental health, health economics, trauma and burns care, as Monash expands its research and innovation presence in the United States.
Bringing together world-leading health and medical researchers, the collaboration will accelerate new solutions to global health challenges.
Monash University Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Sharon Pickering and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) Professor Robyn Ward AM, joined Weill Cornell Medicine’s Senior Associate Dean of International Affairs and Affiliations Dr Michael G. Stewart at Weill Cornell Medicine’s campus in New York City on Tuesday.
Professor Pickering said bringing together researchers and clinicians from both institutions would advance health research and patient care.
“Tackling global health challenges increasingly depends on collaboration and partnerships to deliver impactful world-leading research and innovation at scale,” Professor Pickering said.
“This collaboration between Monash and Weill Cornell Medicine brings together researchers from two medical research powerhouses in global healthcare to rethink how we deliver patient care, optimise health systems, and mobilise research, giving us the scale to challenge traditional models and accelerate progress on health issues affecting millions of people worldwide.”
Dr Stewart said cross-border collaboration is essential to keeping pace with rapidly evolving healthcare research internationally.
“We know that to continue to be a leader in healthcare, we need to think beyond our borders,” Dr Stewart said.
“Collaborating with Monash and working with its leadership to bring together experts in topics such as AI in healthcare practice allows us to innovate and maintain international best practices as information evolves.”
Expanding North American footprint
The collaboration with Weill Cornell Medicine builds on Monash’s growing research and innovation presence in North America, anchored by the establishment of the Monash Boston Hub in Kendall Square, the world’s premier life sciences ecosystem.
Operating from the Cambridge Innovation Centre, the Hub was established last year to connect North American biotech, pharmaceutical, and medtech partners directly with Monash’s research capabilities, translation pipelines, and Australia’s accelerated clinical trial pathways.
“Industry moves fast, and commercialisation shouldn’t slow down while companies try to find the right expertise,” Professor Pickering said.
“We built the Boston Hub to work shoulder-to-shoulder with global partners, streamlining how high-value IP transitions from early discovery into clinical development.”
