Monash researchers named in global top one per cent of Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers

Nineteen Monash academics have been named among the world’s most influential researchers in their fields as part of Clarivate’s 2021 list of Highly Cited Researchers.

The annual list determines the world’s top one per cent of researchers through a comprehensive data analysis, based on the number of highly cited papers researchers produce over an 11-year period.

Two researchers from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty Dean Professor Arthur Christopoulos and Professor Patrick Sexton, were recognised as pioneers across two fields: Biology and Biochemistry, and Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Monash University Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Senior Vice-President Professor Rebekah Brown said the prestigious list highlights the University’s broad and research capacity.

“This is global recognition for a diverse group of Monash researchers working across many disciplines,” Professor Brown said.

“Being in the top one per cent of citations shows their research is having a significant influence on their field, and Monash is a place where research has a long-term impact.”

Monash University President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Gardner AC congratulated the Monash academics named among the world’s most influential researchers in their field.

“I am delighted our researchers' global impact is acknowledged in this prestigious list, highlighting the significance of their work in finding solutions to the world’s complex challenges,” said Professor Gardner.

Clarivate named 6,602 researchers from more than 70 countries and regions this year, in 21 fields of the sciences and social sciences, and cross-field categories.

Australia has 332 highly cited researchers this year – five per cent of the total list – overtaking Germany as having the fourth most highly cited researchers, globally. Clarivate notes this is remarkable for a country the size of Australia with 25 million people compared to Germany’s 83 million.

Professor Brown said the results showcase Australia’s growing reputation as a global research authority.

“Our universities and governments are working to position Australia as an international leader in ground-breaking research . Monash works closely with industry and partners, both locally and overseas. This growth in Australian researchers’ reputation performance is just the beginning as we expand our world-class research operations in the years ahead.”

Researchers’ names are drawn from publications that rank in the top one per cent by citations for both field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index, the world’s largest publisher-neutral citation index and research intelligence platform. Clarivate also incorporates InCites Benchmarking & Analytics, Essential Science Indicators, science performance metrics, and trend data based on scholarly paper publication counts.
