PhD student is China-bound

James Aridas

James Aridas will attend the Go8-C9 HDR forum in Shanghai next month.

James Aridas, of the Monash Institute of Medical Research, has been awarded a highly competitive grant to travel to China for a PhD student forum.

The forum is a joint initiative between the Group of Eight (Go8) universities and the China 9 (C9). It will bring together 34 doctoral students from China and Australia to exchange ideas across disciplines and across national boundaries on key global issues relating to Sustainable Health Futures.

The aim is to strengthen links between C9 and Go8 universities, facilitate collaboration between Australia and China and create academic and professional linkages between the future research leaders of the two countries.

James is currently in his third year of PhD studies at The Ritchie Centre focusing on neuroprotective strategies for the acutely asphyxiated newborn, with an emphasis on cheap and easily administered treatments for low resource settings.

He hopes that a better collaboration between research intensive universities in Australia and China will lead to a greater appreciation of the contributions that each country has already made, and can make in the future to improving the major issues affecting a worldwide population.

"We know that the healthcare budget in Australia continues to grow and will continue to do so with an ageing population. Early interventions during foetal life and infancy could dramatically improve long-term health outcomes and significantly reduce life-time health care costs," James said.

"This forum will hopefully allow for the development of ideas and produce close collaborations between the future generation of researches in a variety of fields." The conference will provide graduate perspectives on key global issues, taking a broader perspective. It welcomes research papers from areas such as the humanities, economics, policy, finance, law, demography, and psychology.

James will attend the C9-Go8 HDR Forum at Shanghai Jiao Tong University from 20 - 24 October.
