Platinum award for Monash pool
The retiled Doug Ellis Swimming Pool
The University's Doug Ellis Swimming Pool has been reaccredited with Life Saving Victoria’s prized Platinum Pool award for the outstanding provision of safety at an aquatic facility.
Group Manager of Monash Sport's Services and Operations, Brett Lavale, said the award was a credit to the professionalism, and commitment to excellence, displayed by Monash Sport’s Aquatics team.
“We achieved a score of 97.13 per cent and we have qualified for the five-Star Platinum Pool Accreditation which is the highest form of safety accreditation available,” Mr Lavale said.
“This is an improvement on last year’s result of 95.96 per cent. As per any audit, we have some minor issues to address, however this is an overwhelmingly positive result and a fantastic reflection on the hard work of our Aquatics team, led by Lisa Beasley.”
The centre had to go through a rigorous series of assessments to ensure it met Life Saving Victoria’s criteria for a Platinum Pool accreditation.
Life Saving Victoria’s Aquatic Risk and Research Manager, Andy Dennis, said the award was a way of recognising those facilities that met the highest safety requirements in the aquatic industry.
“The award is similar to accrediting a lifesaver, and therefore facilities must undergo a thorough assessment of their skills and performance and attain a high standard throughout,” Mr Dennis said.
“We are very selective with who receives Platinum Pool accreditation, and the demonstration of exemplary levels of aquatic safety must be constantly maintained before the award is received.”
Included in the Platinum Pool award is an industry-leading Aquatic Facility Safety Assessment, a six-monthly assessment on implementation of a Safety Improvement Plan, a Life Saving Victoria’s Mystery Guest Visit and Life Saving Victoria’s Work Health and Safety Audit.
Platinum Pool accreditation is valid for 12 months and forms an important part of the facility's overall safety and continual improvement strategy.
The Doug Ellis Swimming Pool was completely retiled earlier this year, completing a suite of new and refurbished sporting facilities provided across the University’s Victorian campuses.
