Professor selected for top women’s mental health presidency
Monash University’s Professor Jayashri Kulkarni has been elected the next President of the International Association for Women’s Mental Health (IAWMH).
Established in 2001, the association’s aim is to improve the mental health of women throughout the world.
Professor Kulkarni, Monash Alfred Psychiatry research centre (MAPrc), will become President of the association in March 2017. She is currently Vice President and was elected by the association’s membership.
Professor Kulkarni said it was a great honour to be elected for the role.
“This is an important position in advocating for women’s mental health globally and will have influence in making policy recommendations to the UN. It is a privilege to be elected,” she said.
IAWMH Executive Director Debby Tucker said the association was looking forward to the next four years with two outstanding leaders from Australia - Professor Helen Herrman ( University of Melbourne) as current President and Professor Kulkarni following her in 2017.
“Both are strong advocates for women, women's mental health and women's empowerment. Their leadership will successfully ensure the association's future and highlight the importance of gender-based research, treatment and care globally,” she said.
