Radiography and medical imaging take centre stage

Students and academics from a range of institutions attended the seminar.
The future of radiography and medical imaging was the topic of conversation at the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences’ inaugural one-day seminar on excellence in research.
One hundred and twenty staff, students, clinicians and academics from a range of different communities and institutions were in attendance to hear about the work being undertaken at Monash.
“The goal of the conference was to showcase the research being performed by Monash staff and students,” said Professor Marilyn Baird, head of the department.
“We were also aiming to inspire our existing students to undertake research in their clinical roles,” said Dr Matthew Dimmock, a lecturer in the department.
In order to facilitate this goal, four eminent keynote speakers were invited to present in the opening session: Associate Professor Dr John Troupis, Co Unit Head of Cardiac CT and Diagnostic Imaging at Monash Health; Dr Jeff Crosbie, NHMRC Early Career Research Fellow, the University of Melbourne; Dr Sarah Everitt, Research Radiation Therapist, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre; and Associate Professor Michael Farrell, MRI specialist at Monash.
Throughout the day, 15 PhD and MPhil students from the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences also gave presentations about their most recent findings.
“It’s great to see so many of our graduate students come together at an event like this,” said Associate Professor Michal Schneider, senior lecturer in the department.
The successful day concluded with a panel discussion, chaired by Professor Baird.
“The collaborative nature of the seminar was applauded and participants were left in no doubt that the future for radiographers and radiation therapists lay in evidence-based practice and research," said Ms Imelda Williams, Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging Degree Course Convenor at Monash.
