Top medical student makes history
Yo Wee Shaun
Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Dean, Professor Christina Mitchell has congratulated Yo Wee Shaun on becoming the first Monash Sunway student to win the prestigious Sophie Davis Memorial Prize.
The prize is the most prestigious available to Monash medical students, and was given to Yo at a graduation luncheon last week after he recorded the highest overall aggregate marks for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program.
Yo graduated from the Sunway campus MBBS program with Honours and completed three years of practical studies at the purpose-built Clinical School Johor Baru.
He said he was honoured to be the first Sunway student to win the memorial prize, and that the program had given him a great start to his medical career.
"The contact with patients I received during the program and the emphasis on putting theoretical knowledge into practice was what excited me the most. In medicine, you have to marry theory and practice; not many courses give you that human contact," Yo said.
"I would like to thank my tutors, especially Deputy Head of School Professor Dato’ Dr Khalid Kadir, for their support."
Professor Mitchell said Yo's achievement was further proof of the University's global presence.
“Monash has always been the most global in outlook of Australia's universities, and our Faculty's international network of campuses is core to our global presence," Professor Mitchell said.
"Congratulations, Yo, on your accomplishment – a first for the MBBS program at our Sunway campus in Malaysia.”
