A message from the Vice-Chancellor and President

The year 2024 was one of inspiring new achievements and ongoing success for Monash University, reflecting the dedication, passion and expertise of our people – colleagues, students, alumni, partners and supporters.

Throughout the year, our work was animated by Monash’s foundational purpose – to realise social and technological transformation to meet the challenges of the age, and to do so for the aspiring communities and industries around us. This enduring purpose lies at the core of the University’s strategy, Impact 2030.

Excellent (Research)

In 2024, Monash continued to take the national and international lead in research. From discovery research that will take us into the future, through to translational research that is changing lives today.

Excellent (Education)

In 2024, we progressed innovative teaching initiatives and scaled up opportunities to connect students with industry and communities both locally and abroad.

International

We implemented our new International plan which includes initiatives to further position Monash’s campuses as anchor institutions. Our popular collaborations with international partners to advance student mobility, excellent research and education continued to grow.

Enterprising

Enterprise at Monash connects individuals and organisations with our world-class research, talent and resources. We are a leader in the commercialisation of bold ideas and impactful solutions supporting student entrepreneurs, start-ups and a portfolio of 33 spinout companies.

Inclusive

We are committed to being an exemplary inclusive education provider and employer of choice. In 2024, we continued to implement action plans to support equity and diversity in higher education for our staff and students. Our ongoing efforts to dismantle barriers to workplace equity and inclusion were also formally recognised.

    We were awarded our fifth Science in Australia Gender Equity Cygnet Award, this time for enhancing the inclusion of transgender and gender-diverse staff.

  • Connecting First Nations students across the globe

    The William Cooper Institute hosted First Nations students from the University of British Columbia as part of the Monash Indigenous Leaders Program.

    Our new Plan seeks to ensure that people with disabilities can live, work and learn at the University with dignity, equality and respect.

Culture

In 2024 we implemented programs and initiatives to support the ways we connect with each other and our communities, locally and internationally.

  • Ambassadors at home

    The Global Ambassador Program brought local and international students together to enhance the international student experience. Of those who took part, 80 per cent reported an increased sense of belonging at the University

  • Fostering campus cohesion

    We announced four key initiatives to foster social cohesion, support dialogue and address tensions across our campuses amid the Middle East conflict, recognising the deep impact of the violence on our community.

  • Justice Bus

    We launched the Justice Bus, a new program to provide free legal education and support to regional and remote communities across Victoria that will address significant legal service gaps in rural areas.
