Two expert panels of female surgeons shared their journeys into surgery with medical students at the annual Women In Surgery Networking Evening. Hosted by the Monash University Surgical Interest Group in collaboration with the Monash University Medical Society Gender Equity Committee, the event aims to inspire and educate future surgeons, particularly women, and address gender equity in the field of surgery, a traditionally male-dominated profession.

Research by Associate Professor Bebe Loff and colleagues from the Department of Forensic Medicine was integral to a UN report on femicide, highlighting the global issue of gender-based killings and the failure of governments to protect women. The report, which was presented at the United Nations in New York, attributed the failure to protect the hundreds of women and girls that are killed each day because of their gender at the feet of governments, and urges them to comply with their obligations to investigate and eradicate femicide.

The Feminist Legal Studies Group, a Faculty of Law collaboration of Australian feminist academics advocating for legislative changes for gender-based justice, expanded its work on new legislative proposals during 2023. Key activities included partnering with the Transnational Criminal Law Group for a conference on sexual assault trials, and engaging in various publications and talks related to feminist legal studies.

Monash-led initiative Advancing Women in Healthcare Leadership was awarded funding by NHMRC to expand its work advancing women in healthcare leadership roles. This initiative includes an embedded national Women in Leadership Scholarship Program, with 30 women, many in rural areas, who are given an opportunity to attend Monash University’s evidence-based Women in Leadership Program for leadership development to transform careers and improve the care of our most underserved populations.

Monash University’s What Happens Next? podcast series explored the societal perceptions and impacts of influencer culture, particularly focusing on gender dynamics and the pay gap between male and female influencers. The series featured discussions on the challenges and stereotypes faced by influencers, predominantly women, and their contribution to the economy.

The Poster Exhibition was held at Monash University’s Clayton Campus during Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Week, showcasing perspectives and insights gathered through academic exploration of the queer experience. A platform to engage with thought-provoking posters, gain new perspectives, and foster meaningful conversations, the exhibition invited contributions from Monash staff and students, aiming to foster dialogue and awareness on gender and sexuality diversity.

Monash University celebrated International Women's Day 2023 with a flagship event at the Alexander Theatre, Clayton campus that was streamed live to staff across its global campuses. The event featured Virginia Haussegger AM as keynote speaker, who reflected on her experiences as a journalist encountering sexism and gendered attitudes in Australia and internationally.
