Industry Placement

Whether you’ve found a placement on your own, or wish to apply for one through our network of industry partners, you can complete it during your summer or winter semester break and have it count as credit towards your degree through the Industry Placement program.

Academic recognition

Your placement could count as 12 credit points in your degree, meaning you don’t have to go out of your way to gain industry experience.

How to apply

Industry placement requires 230 hours of internship work, normally completed over six consecutive weeks full-time or 30 days part-time over 12 weeks.

In the case that a self-sourced, paid internship is longer than the credited period, only the final 230 hours within the approved credit window will count toward your industry placement. Unpaid internships must strictly adhere to the credited hour period.

The industry placement program is for students who have either self-sourced an internship and wish to have it considered for academic credit, or would like to apply for a Monash-sourced internship opportunity with a partner organisation.
Before applying, ensure:
- you are enrolled in an eligible undergraduate IT degree
- you have 12 credit points of free elective space available
- you have completed a course progression appointment and received a course map
- Maintain a 60 WAM
This is an elective unit and does not replace your final year capstone unit.
For student visa holders, Work completed under FIT3190 and FIT4190 is considered elective and is not a mandatory course requirement.As a result, work you undertake within your internship will contribute towards your 48 hour work restriction per fortnight.

As part of the application process for a Monash sourced industry placement, we will shortlist students for industry placements and it will be a competitive process. This process is designed to filter based on industry preparedness and a minimum professional standard – other than the WAM requirement, there is no review of academic performance or technical interviews as part of this shortlisting process.
The application form will require you to provide
- Information about yourself, your skills, and your interests
- Detailed work experience and a CV/resume
- Extracurricular activities
- Degree details (including favourite units and elective choices)
- Role preferences (select your preferred area of work)
- A short video response to a question
  - Introduce yourself
  - Why do you want an industry placement?
  - Time limit: 1-2 minutes
After applications have closed, we will notify all applicants whether they have been shortlisted for consideration with our host companies. This may involve additional steps, like interviews with our host companies. Being shortlisted does not guarantee you with a placement, you will still need to interview with our host companies.
You will also be asked to provide your preferences for the type of roles you would like to be considered for.
You will be notified of your application’s outcome or requested to provide more information via your Monash student email so monitor your inbox closely.
If your application is successful and you are selected by one of our host organisations, the Faculty will confirm next steps which may include an initial meeting between you, your workplace supervisor and a faculty representative.
Once final approval is confirmed, the Faculty will arrange manual enrolment into the correct unit code and teaching period.

During the placement, you will complete academic activities such as goals, logs, reflections, check-ins, supervisor evaluations and a final presentation.

The industry placement program is for students who have either self-sourced an internship and wish to have it considered for academic credit, or would like to apply for a Monash-sourced internship opportunity with a partner organisation.
Before applying, ensure:
- you are enrolled in an eligible undergraduate IT degree
- you have 12 credit points of free elective space available
- you have completed a course progression appointment and received a course map
In addition to these requirements, for self-sourced opportunities:
- you have signed an employment contract with your host organisation, if the opportunity is paid
- your host organisation is willing to sign a Monash University placement agreement before you commence
This is an elective unit and does not replace your final year capstone unit.

Your self-sourced placement must be:
- a new opportunity or new employment arrangement located in Australia
- relevant to your IT studies and professional development
- supervised by an identifiable workplace supervisor
- in-person or hybrid, not fully remote
- covered by a signed Monash University agreement with the host organisation.
Placements will not be approved if they are:
- continuation of an existing job
- fully remote
- outside of Australia
- lacking a clear workplace supervisor
- not meaningfully related to IT
- informal, inconsistent, freelance or missing a formal employment contract.
For the best experience, we suggest choosing an organisation that is of a reasonable size, provides a supervisor with experience in the field and is with a legitimate company. We generally avoid recommending startups due to their limited size and capacity for mentorship.
Before applying, you must confirm that your host organisation is willing to:
- sign a Monash University placement agreement
- confirm your employment details and paid status
- provide a workplace supervisor
- support reasonable academic check-ins during the placement
- contribute to evaluation of your workplace performance and development.
Your enrolment cannot be finalised until the Monash University placement agreement has been executed by all required parties.
To suitably assess your application, you must prepare the following documentation:
- host organisation details, including ABN or equivalent
- workplace supervisor details
- a written position description or task overview
- placement location and work mode (in-person/hybrid)
- whether the placement is paid, or unpaid
- proposed placement dates and an hours plan showing how you will complete 230 hours.
For paid placements:
- confirmation that the role is paid (may be part of your employment contract)
Complete the application form and submit it by the relevant deadline. Your signed employment agreement can be sent to us afterwards within a specified time period.
Submitting an application does not guarantee approval. The Faculty will review whether:
- you meet the program requirements
- the role, supervision, location, hours, and employment conditions meet program requirements
- your course map shows sufficient elective space
- the placement is suitable
- the host organisation can complete the Monash University Placement Agreement.

Frequently asked questions

Can an internship through this unit replace my capstone/project units?expand_more

No – the Industry Placement program is elective. You must use free elective slots in your course map to undertake a 12-credit-point internship. It does not replace any core units.

Can I do an Industry Placement in addition to IBL?expand_more

No – students can complete a maximum of 24 credit points of internship units within an FIT degree. This means you cannot undertake both IBL (18 credit points) and Industry Placement (12 credit points).

Where can I find a list of Monash-sourced companies offering internships through this program?expand_more

In each application cycle, the application form will include a link to a Google Drive folder containing information about all available positions, separated into paid and unpaid roles. As more companies offer placements to our students, we'll add their role information to this folder.

I've secured an internship that starts next week. Can I enrol now?expand_more

Unfortunately not. Enrolment in the Industry Placement program can take time and must align with one of our supported teaching periods. Check the Handbook to see which teaching periods are available, or ask us directly. Apply early to secure your place.
