The Faculty of Information Technology offers graduate research degrees across a range of areas including artificial intelligence, data science and human-centred computing.

Before you apply

A well-prepared application starts before you open the form. Work through the steps below to get ready.

In the Faculty of Information Technology, graduate research is typically aligned to defined research projects. You are expected to identify a project or research area and a potential supervisor before submitting your application.
Supervisor Connect or Find a researcher allows you to explore available research projects and academic expertise by topic, research area or staff member. This is the primary way to identify opportunities within the faculty.
The Faculty recommends you contact potential supervisors to discuss your interest in a project and your suitability before applying. You may wish to provide them with:
- A short introduction and your background
- Your research interests or a brief idea
- Your CV and Academic Transcripts
All applicants must submit a research proposal as part of their application.
In Information Technology, your proposal should align closely with your chosen project or research area. It should clearly outline your intended research focus, demonstrate your understanding of the field, and indicate how your work will contribute to existing research.

The Faculty of Information Technology requires the following documents as part of your application:
- Applicant Summary (save file name as: Applicant Summary – [Your Name].docx) → [Template]
- Evidence of research experience (e.g. thesis/project equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study like examiners’ reports)
- CV (include qualifications, research outputs with hyperlinks, and research experience)
- Proof of acceptance of research outputs (if applicable)
Information Technology applicants should ensure their application clearly demonstrates alignment between their skills, experience and the proposed research project.

Admission-only applications can be submitted at any time.

What happens next?

Once you submit your application it will be directed to your nominated supervisor and the Faculty for review. You may be contacted for further information and any incomplete applications may delay assessment.

Applications are assessed based on academic achievement, research potential, and alignment with the proposed research project and faculty expertise. The Faculty will also consider supervisory capacity and project fit when making an outcome decision.
