This page outlines what you will study in the Master of Information Technology and what you need to enrol in. It explains the course structure for both entry levels, foundation and core requirements, electives, capstone options, and how to plan your enrolment.

How your degree is structured

Each course has specific requirements that must be met to graduate. Your course map outlines these requirements and the order in which they should be completed. Always refer to the course map for the year you commenced your degree.

The Master of Information Technology has two entry levels:

Entry level 1 – 96 credit points (2 years full time)
Entry level 2 – 72 credit points (1.5 years full time)

All units are worth 6 credit points, except FIT5120 Industry experience studio project, which is worth 12 credit points.

Entry level 1 (96 credit points)
You must complete:
- 24 credit points of level-9 foundation units
- 72 credit points of level-5 units
Foundation units (level-9):
- FIT9131: Programming foundations in Java
- FIT9132: Introduction to databases
- FIT9136: Algorithms and programming foundations in python
- FIT9137: Introduction to computer architecture and networks
You are required to complete 24 points of level-9 units and 72 points of level-5 units across your degree.
Entry level 2 (72 credit points)
You must complete:
- 72 credit points of level-5 units
This includes:
- Six core units
- One Information Technology unit from an approved list
- One level-5 elective
- Advanced practice (24 credit points)
Refer to your course map for the specific units that apply to your entry level.
Units are the basic components of study in your degree. Each 6-credit-point unit typically requires an average of 12 hours of study per week over 12 weeks (approximately 144 hours total), including classes, assessments and private study.
Unit codes indicate level:
- Level-9 units (for example FIT9XXX or MAT9XXX) are foundation units
- Level-5 units (FIT5XXX) are core, elective and capstone units
Across your degree:
- Entry level 1: 24 credit points of level-9 units and 72 credit points of level-5 units
- Entry level 2: 72 credit points of level-5 units
All units are worth 6 credit points, except FIT5120 Industry experience studio project, which is worth 12 credit points.
All prerequisite and corequisite requirements must be met before enrolling in a unit. These are listed in the Handbook.
We recommend completing your foundation and core units early in your degree, as many advanced units require them as prerequisites.
If you are commencing:
- February/March – enrol in units for Semester 1 and Semester 2
- July – enrol in units for Semester 2 only
You should enrol in foundation units (FIT9XXX or MAT9XXX) in your first semester:
- February/March intake – follow Year 1 on the course map
- July intake – enrol in the foundation units offered in Semester 2
Domestic students may enrol in four units per semester (full time) or three units per semester (part time).
International students must enrol in four units per semester.
Always refer to your course map and handbook entry for detailed progression requirements.
The final component of your degree is a capstone project designed to demonstrate the skills you have developed throughout the course.
You have two options:
Research pathway (Minor Thesis)
This option includes a thesis component and is recommended if you intend to pursue a higher degree by research.
For the full-year research stream, you must achieve:
- An overall average of at least 75% across the best four prerequisite units
- At least a distinction in FIT5125 IT research methods

Industry Experience option
This pathway involves advanced coursework and completion of:
- FIT5120 Industry experience studio project (12 credit points)
This option includes working with an industry professional.
Both capstone options require completion of specific prerequisite and/or corequisite units.
If you have completed university-level study equivalent to units in this degree, you may apply for:
- Credit – you receive credit points and do not complete the equivalent unit
- Exemption – you do not receive credit points and must replace the unit with another unit
If you applied for credit as part of your course application, your credit has already been processed. Refer to your course map and enrol in the remaining required units.
If you have not applied yet, you may:
- Search previous credit decisions online
- Submit a credit application through the online system
Foundation credit (level-9)
- If transcripts were already provided, there is no need to resubmit them
- Enrol in foundation units initially to secure your place
- Adjust your enrolment once credit is confirmed
Level-5 credit
- Submit a credit application with unit syllabi
- Enrol in a standard enrolment until credit is confirmed
You will be notified once your credit has been processed. If further information is required, you will be contacted.
