Monash University seeks Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants for PhDs, with opportunities available across all research areas.

A PhD involves extensive, independent research guided by an expert academic supervisor. You will use your research to make a positive contribution and impact in your chosen field. You can undertake your PhD as part of the Monash Doctoral Program or as part of a Joint Research Degree.

Indigenous Pathways into Monash research degrees
Monash University offers multiple entry pathways and research programs specifically designed for Indigenous researchers interested in pursuing a graduate research course.
To be eligible, applicants typically need one of the following:
- A 4-year bachelor's degree
- A 2-year master’s degree
- Demonstrated research experience and strong academic results in a related quantitative discipline

Please note: To apply for a graduate research degree, you will usually need to identify a research topic and find a suitable supervisor. Some faculties and graduate programs also advertise pre-approved research projects that may align with your interests.
Remuneration
We offer a range of scholarships and financial aid options specifically for Indigenous Australian students to undertake a PhD or Research Masters degree. If successful, you will receive a generous scholarship covering tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at a current value up to $52,352 per annum. Additional financial support is available through research and teaching assistance work.
The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous) offers additional financial support on a case-by-case basis. Additional funding is also available at the faculty level to support research and teaching initiatives. Please contact the Indigenous Research team to discuss.

- A cover letter which includes a brief statement of the applicant’s suitability and a short research proposal (not exceeding 1000 words) including project aims and objectives.
