The Melbourne Experiment
Cities for people
The Melbourne Experiment is a landmark interdisciplinary research collaboration studying the effects of COVID-19 on the functions of a city and an international model for post-COVID-19 urban recovery and renewal.
Bringing together research expertise across Monash University, the Melbourne Experiment examines key activities and elements of the urban environment before, during and after the COVID-19 shutdown.
The Melbourne Experiment will use its findings to contribute to new approaches for urban renewal, emphasising innovation, sustainability and social cohesion alongside economic prosperity to help meet the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
As the Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Regional Centre of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Monash is uniquely placed and motivated to mobilise communities to create a better and more sustainable future, as articulated by the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Our Projects
COVID-19 is having an immense impact on the shape of our society. It is vital that governments, community leaders and other decision makers have access to the best information during the recovery. Our researchers will make a profound contribution toward that outcome.

Monash Covid 19 Research
We are at the forefront of urgent research to resolve and respond to COVID-19 across health, business, technology, governance, sustainability and more.

The Melbourne Experiment Report: 17 Lessons for Urban Resilience and Renewal
Bringing together research expertise across Monash University, the Melbourne Experiment examines elements of the urban environment before, during and after the COVID-19 shutdown. Through over 40 unique interdisciplinary projects, research teams have been investigating, analysing, and advising on the core issues stemming from this crisis.

Navigating Economic Uncertainty in Post-Covid Cities
We map the geography and demographics of Covid-vulnerable employment areas in all suburbs in Australia’s five largest capital cities.

The Monash Infrastructure Seed Fund
Monash Infrastructure established the MI Seed Fund to support new interdisciplinary research projects that address infrastructure-related problems and generate new knowledge to help design, develop, operate and use infrastructure more efficiently, safely, sustainably and in-line with community and social needs.

Sustainable Development Goals
The United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in 2015 to focus global efforts on achieving environmental sustainability, social inclusion and economic prosperity targets by 2030.
