Safety and security for Monash staff

We’re committed to ensuring we have a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for everyone here at Monash. It’s essential our staff uphold standards of behaviour, and manage staff and student behaviour appropriately. Together, we can create a campus community where everyone feels valued, protected and supported.

Here at Monash, we expect our staff to conduct themselves with honesty, respect and fairness. We have high professional standards, and unacceptable behaviour in the workplace is not tolerated.

For more information about expected behaviour, ethical conduct and child safe standards, see our culture of respect website.

Reporting unacceptable behaviour

You can report unacceptable behaviour by other staff members (including bullying) to the University – take a look at our raise a concern page for who you can contact.

If you experience sexual harm, family violence, stalking or threats, you can contact the Safer Community Unit (SCU) for confidential advice and assistance – they can give you information about your safety, support and reporting options.

Sexual harm

We’re committed to providing assistance to individuals impacted by sexual harm.

We recognise that disclosing and reporting sexual harm can be difficult. Our trauma-informed and person-centred approach emphasises the safety and wellbeing of victim-survivors and addresses individual needs through various tailored support options.

SCU provides confidential advice and assistance to access safety measures, support services, and both formal and informal reporting options.

For more information, see our Sexual Harm Prevention and Response Policy (pdf, 0.23 mb) and Sexual Harm Response Procedure (pdf, 0.25 mb).

Family violence

We recognise that if you’re experiencing family violence (or helping a family member in this situation) it may affect your attendance or performance at work.

SCU can assist you to access special paid leave and other flexible work arrangements. We can also provide you with safety arrangements and referrals to support services.

For more information, see our Family Violence Support Procedure (pdf, 0.21 mb).

It can often be challenging to manage students who are behaving inappropriately. But as a staff member, it’s essential you intervene early to ensure other students and staff are protected.

What to do

If you see, experience or hear about any unacceptable behaviour, make a report to the Safer Community Unit – they’ll be able to give you advice and strategies to help:

Report an incident or concern

If you think someone is in danger of being hurt, call:

  • Monash Security on 03 9905 3333 or 333 from a Monash phone (for immediate help on campus)
  • 000 (for immediate help on or off campus).

You should also encourage students who have been affected by concerning behaviour to contact the Safer Community Unit and seek help and support.
