Action Translate: enacting authentic, intercultural learning through a collaborative international online translation experience
Overview
University educators struggle to provide sustainable, authentic learning experiences providing students the same complex realities of real-world translation practice. This study will prepare student translators for the 21st century by developing a student-led program focusing on translation and transcultural studies supported by an online platform called Action Translate
Scenario
The Action Translate platform emerged from Monash and brings together automatic translation processes with human post-editing skills to bring quality translations in multiple languages. The evolution of the programme will develop traditional translation skills and support students with intercultural, technological and digital skills required to advance their career.
Approach
Through co-designing workshops that engage the 450 translations and transcultural students enrolled at Monash and Warwick with their educators and running three inter-university rounds, the research is evaluated. Through working with not-for-profit partners development of the Action Translate platform will benefit their communities without the commercial costs
Outcome
This project will introduce curricular activity for students in multiple discipline areas and can be scaled up and disseminated to Monash and Warwick partners across Europe and Asia. The Action Translate platform has already proven to be effective to work across multiple language combinations, most recently the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat into 16 languages, 11 having non-Latin alphabets.
