Monash Faculty of IT Dean announced as winner in 2019 Executive of the Year Awards
Congratulations to the Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology (IT), Professor Jon Whittle, who was announced as the Education Executive of the Year.
Last night, The CEO Magazine’s 2019 Executive of the Year Awards recognised 76 of Australia’s most outstanding business leaders across 22 categories.
In its eighth year, The CEO Magazine annual awards night brought together an exceptional mix of successful executives, entrepreneurs, academics, tech pioneers, thought leaders and activists. Presented by Larry Emdur at The Palladium in Crown, the black-tie event welcomed more than 600 guests and nominees from the country’s most respected institutions.
Congratulations to the Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology (IT), Professor Jon Whittle, who was announced as the Education Executive of the Year. Professor Whittle was recognised for his commitment to championing social good through IT research and promoting diversity and inclusion.
Over the past 12 months, the Dean’s vision for the Faculty of IT has centred around strategy, people and process. With almost 6,000 IT graduates, the faculty is well placed to fill the current job-skills gap with the next generation of IT leaders.
“My overarching goal has been to build on the Faculty of IT’s achievements and solve the challenges that confront society in the digital age. Through our extensive global partnerships, we’re driving innovation in IT,” says Professor Whittle.
His work has bridged the gap between academia and industry, and driven strong collaborations around the world.
“I am particularly proud of our work with the Australian Federal Police to reduce the trauma police officers face when exposed to child exploitation materials. Other noteworthy projects include our partnership with Honeywell to explore how machine learning can save energy and working with CollinStar Capital to apply blockchain research across all industries,” shared Professor Whittle.
This is the first CEO Magazine Award presented to Professor Whittle, who was nominated alongside leaders in his category from organisations such as MindChamps, Soar Aviation and Builders Academy Australia.
This annual award shines a spotlight on the achievements of remarkable individuals and is judged by a panel of highly regarded business professionals. The judges are well-respected experts in their industries with vast experience in their professional careers.
About Professor Jon Whittle
Professor Jon Whittle is an education leader and one of the most cited researchers in his field. With a global profile, he is a world-renowned expert in software engineering and human-computer interaction (HCI), with a particular interest in IT for social good. In software engineering, his work has focused around model-driven development (MDD) and, in particular, studies on industrial adoption of MDD. In HCI, he is interested in ways to develop software systems that embed social values. Jon's work is highly interdisciplinary. As an example, he previously led a large multidisciplinary project with ten academic disciplines looking at how innovative digital technologies can support social change.
Before joining Monash, Professor Jon Whittle was a former researcher at NASA on software engineering challenges for space systems. He was also Head of School and Chair of Software Engineering in the School of Computing and Communications at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom.
