This page outlines what you will study in the Bachelor of Computer Science Advanced (Honours) and what you need to enrol in. It explains your core units, specialisation, research components, electives, and enrolment planning.

Enrolling in units through WES is how you formally accept your offer.

How your degree is structured

Each course has specific requirements that must be met to graduate. Your course map outlines these requirements year by year and semester by semester.

The Bachelor of Computer Science Advanced (Honours) consists of:

8 core (compulsory) units
1 specialisation (8 units)
Research units (FIT2082 and FIT2083)
A 4th-year, 24-point Honours project
An Industry Based Learning (IBL) placement or a specialisation-related project (12 or 18 points)
8 free electives

This totals 32 units (192 credit points).

You must complete all of the following core units to meet the requirements of your degree.:
- FIT1047: Introduction to computer systems, networks and security
- FIT1049: IT professional practice
- FIT1053: Introduction to programming (advanced)
- FIT1054: Fundamentals of algorithms (advanced)
- FIT1058: Foundations of computing
- FIT2004: Algorithms and data structures
- FIT2014: Theory of computation
- FIT2094: Databases
These units develop advanced programming, algorithms, theoretical foundations, systems knowledge, databases, and professional skills.
All core units must be completed to meet the requirements of the degree.
Each unit has a code and a name, for example FIT1053 Introduction to programming (advanced). The first digit indicates the year level.
Across your degree:
- First-year units (FIT1xxx): normally 8 units (48 points), maximum 10 units (60 points)
- Third-year units (FIT3xxx): minimum 6 units (36 points)
- Most units are worth 6 credit points
- 32 units × 6 credit points = 192 credit points required
All prerequisite and corequisite requirements must be met before enrolling in a unit.
Specialisation (compulsory)
You must complete one specialisation consisting of eight units.
Available specialisations:
Once selected, you must complete all core units within your chosen specialisation.
Research units and Honours project
This degree includes a strong research component:
- FIT2082: Computer science research project
- FIT2083: Innovation and research in computer science
- A 4th-year, 24-point Honours project
These units build research capability and culminate in an extended Honours project.
Industry Based Learning or project
You must complete either:
- An Industry Based Learning (IBL) placement (18 points), or
- A project related to your specialisation* (12 points)
*Students completing the 18-point IBL option will not complete the alternative elective.
The BCompScAdv(Hons) includes 8 free electives and, depending on your project choice, 2 or 3 specialist electives.
You may use your electives to:
- Complete an Information Technology major*
- Complete one or two minors
- Complete a major from another faculty
- Select individual elective units
*If completing an IT major, up to two units may be cross-counted between the major and your course core. This also applies to minors.
Your specialist electives must be chosen from an approved list published in the course map or handbook.
Majors (optional)
Majors consist of eight units studied over at least three years. Majors are not compulsory but appear on your academic transcript.
Available IT majors include:
- Applied cybersecurity (not available with the Cybersecurity specialisation)
- Business information systems
- Games and immersive media
- Software development
Minors (optional)
Minors consist of four units studied over at least two years and appear on your transcript.
Available IT minors include:
- 3D modelling and animation
- Business information systems
- Cybersecurity (not available with the Cybersecurity specialisation)
- Data science (not available with the Data science specialisation)
- Games design
- Games development
- Human computer interaction
- Mobile apps development
- Software development
- Software engineering
- Web development
You may also complete a major or minor from another faculty, such as Science. Non-FIT options include applied mathematics, mathematics, pure mathematics, and languages.

When enrolling in WES, you may nominate majors if you wish. This is optional and can be changed later.
Course maps outline the recommended progression for the course, including core units, specialisation units, research components, and electives.
Always refer to the course map for the year you commenced.
You must enrol in units for both Semester 1 and Semester 2.
Domestic full-time students normally enrol in four units per semester.
International students on a student visa must enrol in four units per semester.
In first year:
- Most students choose one elective in each semester
- Students completing the Data science specialisation may only need to choose an elective in Semester 1
Refer to your course map or handbook entry for full details.
You may apply for credit for completed Diploma-level TAFE or university-level study.
If granted:
- Credit points will count towards your degree
- You will not be required to complete equivalent units
You can search previous credit decisions online before applying.
If you completed Units 3 & 4 VCE Algorithmics (HESS), you are eligible for 12 credit points: FIT1045 and a Level 1 FIT elective.
Credit applications can be submitted online after creating your Monash computer account. Supporting documentation must include transcripts and detailed unit outlines.
If you have already applied for credit, refer to your course map and enrol in the remaining required units.
You may apply for an Industry Based Learning placement.
While undertaking IBL:
- You cannot enrol in on-campus units
- Core requirements must be completed outside the IBL semester
- International students may need to overload or complete summer/winter units to maintain the four-year duration
Students may complete one IBL placement, subject to meeting entry requirements. Prerequisites include one of FIT1045, FIT1048, FIT1051, FIT1053 or ENG1003, and FIT1049.
IBL replaces specific units depending on specialisation:
- Algorithms and software: FIT3161, FIT3162 and the approved elective
- Artificial intelligence: FIT3192, FIT3193 and the approved AI elective
- Cybersecurity: FIT3188, FIT3189 and the approved Cyber elective
- Data science: FIT3163, FIT3164 and one approved DS&AI elective
Students who do not complete IBL must complete a capstone (third-year) project. Prerequisites are listed in the Handbook.
