Embracing change in a dynamic environment
Ever since she first studied Business Information Systems at school, Phoebe Wallace (BCom 2012, BBIS 2012) has recognised how much organisations benefit from information technology. This awareness has informed her career path from internal and external IT audits, Systems, Applications and Products (SAP) security engagements, Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) compliance to controls transformation and project governance.
These days Phoebe works as a Governance and Reporting Lead at Transurban, a company that manages and develops urban toll road networks in Australia and North America. “I liaise with various business and technology stakeholders, which I love,” she shares. “I work with technology to ensure we’re providing our asset managers with service that meets or exceeds our contractual and regulatory requirements.”
Phoebe has thrived in the supportive environment of Transurban. “The company encourages ingenuity and collaboration amongst its employees,” she says. “We’re growing at a rapid rate and, with growth, comes change and the opportunity to improve our way of operating.”
While at Monash, Phoebe undertook an industry-based learning (IBL) placement in Risk Advisory at Deloitte. This experience shaped her career. “It allowed me to learn on the job from subject-matter experts,” she explains. “The exposure to work, and people, that the program gave me significantly contributed to choosing the path of governance and compliance in technology.”
After graduating, Phoebe returned to Deloitte, where she was promoted to Senior Analyst. During her years there, she jumped at the chance to travel. “I spent six months in Singapore providing a client support and assistance in the delivery of SOX compliance,” she recounts. “This allowed me to further develop my skills in stakeholder management and maintaining compliance within an Agile project environment.”
Now well into her career, Phoebe offers this advice to anyone just starting out: “Listen to others. Try to understand the problems people face in today’s fast-paced technological environment, where change is the only constant. Ask the right questions. Challenge the norm.” Join the evolution!
