Monash Alumna Shaila Pervin takes technology to the next level with her beatObox app.
Congratulations to Monash Alumna, Shaila Pervin, and her husband Saikat Islam, for their outstanding performance in the Samsung Gear App Challenge 2014.
The Samsung Gear App Challenge invites developers to create innovative, functional and original apps for the Samsung Gear 2.
Out of almost 1,000 entries from around the world, Shaila and Saikat's app made it into the competition's 'Top 40'. In recognition, Shaila and Saikat were awarded $10,000 in prize money – and their app has been downloaded more than 9,000 times since!
So what's the app that impressed the panel of judges? It's called the 'beatObox'!
As a self-proclaimed 'music freak', Shaila dreamed of an app that makes listening to music on-the-go more convenient.
'If you take public transport, you know how frustrating it can be when your train or tram is so packed that you can't even pull out your phone to change the music track or adjust the volume,' said Shaila.
Although a controller already exists, Shaila and Saikat created an app with an improved user interface and added functionality.
'With beatObox, there's nothing you can't do! You can control the volume and song tracks using gesture control, use equaliser features and view and select songs from playlists – all from your wrist,' explained Shalia.
Shaila completed her PhD in Query Processing over Distributed Wireless Sensor Networks at Monash University in 2013 under the supervision of Dr. Joarder Kamruzzaman and Dr. Gour Karmakar.
'The Faculty of IT at Monash helped me to pursue interests and to secure a role at IBM! I participated in the 1st Innovation Showcase in 2013 which is where I met the Director of the IBM Research Lab.'
Shaila is now a Postdoctoral Researcher at IBM Research Australia in the Social Media Research Team specialising in information visualisation.
