Researchers from Monash University Malaysia School of Business are analysing online communications using machine learning to detect and prevent cyberbullying in real-time. The project, which is being undertaken in partnership with researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Patna, involves developing algorithms that can identify cyberbullying behavior through natural language processing and deep learning models.

Research led by the Monash Indigenous Studies Centre and published in Current Issues in Criminal Justice identified systematic racism in Australia's justice system as a contributing factor to the deaths of 151 Indigenous women. The study, focusing on intimate partner homicides, called for significant reforms in policing and accountability to prevent such deaths and protect Indigenous women.

In 2023, the Transnational Criminal Law Group in the Faculty of Law focused on enhancing research culture among higher degree research students and early career academics, with a thematic emphasis on corporate criminal liability, transnational enforcement, criminal trials, and criminal law technology. Key activities throughout the year included securing significant research funding, contributing to law reform, and hosting international events and workshops.

Faculty of Arts researchers published a paper the British Journal of Politics and International Relations analysing the concept of the ‘Anglosphere’ and its influence on Australian national identity and public policy. The study explored how historical and recent political decisions in Australia, influenced by relationships with other English-speaking countries, have shaped national debates and international relations.

The Monash Law Clinics Clinical Legal Education program provides the opportunity for all Monash Law undergraduates and Juris Doctor students to work with real clients, on real legal issues, while serving the community and earning credit towards their degree. The program encompasses a range of areas, including the Law Reform Clinic and Afghanistan Support Clinic, addressing issues from law reform to humanitarian aid.

Monash Indonesia’s Master of Public Policy and Management program is designed to equip professionals with practical knowledge and skills in policy-making, policy analysis and public management to address contemporary policy challenges in Indonesia and internationally. The program offers specialisations in global studies, enabling students to develop policymaking skills and knowledge in international contexts, or policy studies covering a choice of streams including Business Innovation, Public Health, Public Policy and Urban Design.

Monash Arts has collaborated with advocacy group Scholars at Risk to offer a third year undergraduate unit, Activism for Academic Freedom, that enables students to advocate for academics at risk of persecution overseas. Students enrolled in the 12-week exercise engaged in creating advocacy plans to support imprisoned academics and organise events to raise awareness of their situation.

Monash University and the Australian Federal Police launched the expanded AI for Law Enforcement and Community Safety Lab (AiLECS) in the Faculty of Information Technology. The AiLECS Lab focuses on using AI technologies including machine learning and natural language processing to support law enforcement in areas such as countering child abuse material, detecting illegal firearms, and combating misinformation.

Journalist and author Professor Stan Grant was appointed as the inaugural Director of the Constructive Institute Asia Pacific, which aims to rebuild media integrity and counter misinformation. The Institute, part of the Faculty of Arts, will focus on fostering a healthier democracy through improved news culture in the Asia Pacific region.

The Centre for Commercial Law and Regulatory Studies (CLARS) facilitates innovative research in commercial law, corporate governance and regulation. In 2023, CLARS hosted a series of international conferences and engaged in activities promoting corporate governance and regulation. These included advising competition officials in ASEAN, recognizing Indigenous law students, and co-hosting conferences in Italy and Ireland on sustainable capitalism and securities law. CLARS also participated in launching the Asian Corporate Law Forum in Singapore.

Australian Law Reform Commission president and Monash alumni, the Hon Justice Mordecai Bromberg, presented the keynote address at the Monash Law Gala Dinner 2023. The event highlighted Monash Law’s commitment to law reform through education and research, showcasing contributions from students, alumni, and faculty members. Key discussions included family law reform, international trade law, and environmental law.

The episode featured discussions with experts from diverse disciplines across Monash on the importance of maintaining civility even when confronting individuals with differing opinions, and the role of civility in preserving democratic principles and nurturing a collective pursuit of the common good.
