Mobile information systems for rural Bangladesh
PROTIC (Participatory Research and Ownership with Technology, Information and Change) is a five-year international development project funded by a $3.86 million gift from the Empowerment Charitable Trust.
The project aims to provide more than 20,000 farmers from the poorest communities in isolated regions of Bangladesh with access to mobile information services. These services will answer agricultural questions, send environmental alerts, support literacy and health education, provide information about entitlements and rights, and enable farmers to contribute their knowledge and expertise relating to local conditions. A particular focus is on empowering rural women through interactive community information services.
