In November 2022 Monash University was awarded $34.9 million by the Australian Research Council (ARC) to lead the new ARC Centre of Excellence for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The funding will support seven years of research to understand the problem of violence against women and address the structural drivers that cause and compound it. Based in the Faculty of Arts, the Centre will pioneer evidence-based approaches to improve policy and practice. The empowerment of Indigenous ethics and leadership of research will be used to investigate how violence is shaped by dominant beliefs and institutions in communities where colonial, racialised and gender hierarchies apply.
The Monash Gender and Family Violence Prevention Centre is at the forefront of research and education aimed at preventing family violence. Based in the Faculty of Arts, the centre contributes to transformative social change aimed at ending family violence by providing an evidence base for policy change that better supports and protects those experiencing family violence and addresses the cultural and economic drivers that underpin it.
The Centre hosted regular events throughout 2022 as part of its Seminar Series, and provided submissions and gave evidence to governments relating to the Independent Commission of Inquiry into Queensland Police Service responses to domestic and family violence, as well as the Queensland Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce.
The Monash Gender, Peace and Security (GPS) Centre's vision is to build gender-inclusive research evidence to deliver peace and security globally. Research informs scholarly debate, policy development and implementation, and public understanding about the gendered nature of insecurity and the search for peace. In addition to research and community engagement, Monash GPS academics engage in undergraduate and graduate teaching, executive education and PhD supervision.
In 2022 GPS released its final reports for Gender Analysis of Violent Extremism and the Impact of COVID-19 on Peace and Security in ASEAN, commissioned by UN Women, and A Global Review of the Development of Military Gender Advisor Capabilities, examining the effectiveness of military gender advisor capabilities around the world.
Other SDGs:
This Faculty of Law project aims to improve understanding of how remote technologies can be used to enhance access to justice for victim-survivors of family violence. Research findings will inform the development of a collaborative and technologically enabled network of facilities focused on innovation in access to justice initiatives, with a view to improving legal practice throughout Victoria, including for rural, regional and remote communities.
Legal Tech for Justice is funded by a 2021 grant from VHESIF and is funding the Safe and Equal @ Work program led by the Monash Gender and Family Violence Prevention Centre.

Other SDGs:
Her Research Matters (HRM) is a grass-roots driven collective established to promote, sponsor and foster an inclusive, equitable leadership environment to enable women in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences to reach their full potential. HRM is distinctively outcome-focused, seeking to leverage collective networks, skills and voices to raise the international profile of leading women in the faculty and celebrate their successes.

In 2022, Monash offered 99 units directly related to SDG5 with 6,553 total enrolments.
The units highlighted below are a small sample of the units at Monash relating to gender equality:
Hosted by Malaysia University Malaysia’s School of Arts and Social Sciences, unit AMU3560 Contemporary Feminisms in Asia explores feminist knowledges and practices in Asia. Feminisms have relevance when it potentially questions assumptions or biases, reviews existing practices - particularly those that lead to gender-based discrimination and violence - opens up possibilities for providing solutions to a particular problem or redress to a social injustice or spaces of negotiation to a controversy or impasse.
Female students outnumber males in both applications and enrolments at Monash University.

Female students outperform males in both completions and completion rates at Monash University.

Water for Women supports organisations to implement gender and socially inclusive water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects in South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
A collaboration between Faculty of Law and Art, Design and Architecture researchers, the project is supported by the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (DFAT) Water for Women Fund.
In 2022 the project released a toolkit and policy brief designed for practitioners, policy makers, donors and government officials in the WASH space to design and deliver more inclusive and fairer water and sanitation projects and services in urban informal settlements.

The Saudi School Theatre project in the Faculty of Education studies the development of school theatrical performance across the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
A partnership with the Saudi Ministry of Culture, the School Theatre project will prepare 120 of Saudi Arabian school teachers with sufficient knowledge and professional skills to create, and nurture a local culture of school theatre in the Kingdom. This project represents the first time that teachers in Saudi Arabia have been offered professional training in theatrical performance. They were developed through a collaboration between XYX Lab at Monash Art, Design and Architecture, La Trobe University and RMIT, with funding by the Victorian Government.
The TramLab Toolkits won Best in Category for Design Strategy at the Victorian Premier’s Design Awards at the start of 2023.

The activity is part of a larger partnership project aimed at building a foundation of exchange and collaboration between Korea, Japan, and Australia through the development of a collaborative research network on gender and migration.
Other SDGs:
The new Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Framework 2022-2030 is the centrepiece of Monash’s strategic governance on equity, diversity and inclusion, aimed at advancing the ‘Inclusive’ goal of Monash’s strategic plan, Impact 2030.
Plans to enable, monitor and evaluate goals in the Framework will be developed and embedded with tangible, pragmatic actions that create accountabilities across all facets of the University and timeframes for completion. There will also be methods for assessing the impact of these actions, overseen by the EDI Committee, so that proceeding plans can be adapted to ensure maximum change is achieved.

Monash launched its four-year Gender Equality Action Plan in 2022. The Action Plan was the outcome of extensive research and consultation, including a wide-ranging gender audit of Monash workplaces.
The Gender Equality Action Plan outlines measurable actions across seven priority areas:
Implementation of the Gender Equality Action Plan is overseen by the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and led by the Athena Swan Steering Committee and Monash HR.
In 2022, Monash developed and launched the National Student Safety Survey (NSSS) Action Plan 2022-2023, which drives the University’s evidence-based actions in preventing sexual harm and gender-based violence. This document was developed after extensive consultations with the Monash community following the release of the NSSS national survey results in March 2022. Work commenced in September 2022 and by the end of 2022 13 action items across the four priority areas were complete and 56 were underway.
