Media statement: 28 January

The health and safety of our staff and students is paramount. We understand many in the Monash community will be concerned about coronavirus. Monash University has many students and staff whose home is in China and/or who regularly visit China as part of their University responsibilities.

Since last week a response group, comprising senior members of the University have been monitoring developments relating to coronavirus both in Australia and globally.  Our monitoring includes taking advice from the World Health Organisation (WHO), Centre for Disease Control and the Australian and Victorian Government Chief Medical Officer.

Current situation at Monash University:

  • All University travel to the Hubei province of China has ceased, in line with Australian Government travel recommendations.
  • Exams scheduled for week commencing 3 February in China and Caulfield deferred to a later date.
  • Voluntary 14 day isolation for staff or students returning from all parts of China (or have had contact with anyone from the Hubei Province).

As this is a dynamic situation we are dealing with we will continue to monitor the situation and add or change recommendations in line with the information received from the Australian Government.
