Novel coronavirus update

3 February 2020

Dear Student,

The health, safety and wellbeing of the Monash community is always our primary priority. The University is taking the coronavirus health emergency seriously. We are thinking of all our staff and students currently in China and unable to return to Australia.

Please see this video message from Monash’s President and Vice Chancellor, Professor Margaret Gardner AC.

We realised early on that this was a dynamic situation and have made difficult decisions to protect the health and wellbeing of our entire community.

Inline with the Prime Minister’s announcement to limit entry to Australia from those travelling from China (other than Australian citizens, permanent residents and their families), Monash continues to ask all students returning from China to stay in their homes for 14 days after arrival in Australia.

Monash has many students who may be affected by these new travel bans - those who hold a student visa are currently unable to travel to Australia for at least 14 days.

By delaying our semester start date to 9 March (with online classes that week) and not requiring on campus attendance until 16 March we are hopeful that in the almost six weeks until students are back on campus we will see this situation with the coronavirus improve.
