Monash University physicist awarded $400,000 for critical quantum technology research

Dr Michael Barson ARC

Congratulations to Dr Michael Barson from the School of Physics and Astronomy on being awarded $400,000 as part of the Australian Research Council’s (ARC) Early Career Industry Fellowships Program.

This award recognises Dr Barson’s research into quantum sensing for communication and navigation in environments where traditional methods fail.

Dr Barson is among three Monash University researchers recognised in this funding round.  The ARC has committed $22.5 million towards 50 projects nationwide, aimed at fostering industry collaboration and promoting the commercial application of Australian research.

The grant will support Dr Barson’s collaboration with DefendTex, an Australian company renowned for its services to the military and law enforcement communities globally.

The partnership will focus on developing advanced quantum magnetic sensing technology, a critical innovation for navigation and communication in challenging undersea and underground conditions.

Traditional GPS and communication methods, which rely on high-frequency electromagnetic signals, cannot penetrate conductive media such as sea-water and soil effectively. Dr Barson’s work aims to overcome these barriers by harnessing low-frequency magnetic signals that can traverse these challenging environments.

The project aims to integrate cutting-edge applied physics with manufacturing processes to produce compact, robust, high-performance quantum technology that is both cost-effective and deployable.

This technological advancement is expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities and autonomy of underwater and underground vehicles, for both defense and security applications.

This development is not only a leap forward in quantum technology but also a strategic enhancement of Australia’s capabilities in defense and security-related technology sectors.

The partnership between Dr Barson and DefendTex higlights the potential of academic-industrial collaborations to yield transformative technological solutions with far-reaching impacts.

Monash University received a total of $1,376,780 in ARC funding for three innovative projects under the fellowship program.
