Indigenous health and education View

Monash Rural Health has launched several initiatives to improve health outcomes and education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, emphasising cultural safety and partnership:

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Framework 2021-2030 was launched on Dja Dja Wurrung country, focusing on cultural safety, health outcomes, and Indigenous learning in curricula.
Monash medical student Isabel Lee completed an Indigenous health-focused elective with Coomealla Health Aboriginal Corporation, gaining insights into cultural holistic care.
Monash Rural Health Bendigo supports pathways for First Nations health professionals from kindergarten to careers, including the Teddy Bear Hospital and cultural induction sessions.
Warragul Regional College Aboriginal students participated in an event at Monash Rural Health to explore careers in rural health. These initiatives align with SDG 3 by promoting good health and well-being, SDG 4 by enhancing quality education, SDG 10 by reducing inequalities, and SDG 17 by fostering partnerships.

Virtual training program upskills Pacific Islands surgeons View

Professor Ram Nataraja from the Department of Paediatrics in the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health leads the Pacific Islands Virtual Online Training in Surgery (PIVOTS) program. This virtual surgical training program, developed by Monash Children’s Simulation at Monash Children’s Hospital Simulation Centre in collaboration with Fiji National University and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, aims to improve surgical outcomes in low-resource Pacific Island countries.

The program addresses the need for excellence in surgical education, especially highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, by using simulation-based education and virtual methodologies. It has trained 107 surgeons, 71% of whom are women, across six partner countries, enhancing local healthcare delivery.

Researchers from Monash University's Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, including Dr Angelina Lim and PhD candidate Shahd Alzard, conducted a global study revealing significant gaps in antimicrobial knowledge and planetary health education among undergraduate students in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry, and veterinary fields. The study emphasises the need for comprehensive education on antimicrobial stewardship to combat antimicrobial resistance and its environmental impacts.

The research reviewed 144 articles and highlighted the necessity for interdisciplinary education and awareness of antimicrobial stewardship beyond just resistance, focusing on responsible use, disposal, and environmental contamination. The findings aim to inform planetary health curriculums and improve healthcare practices globally.
