Compassionate and hardship package

8 April 2020

Dear student,

Last week we announced a $15 million Compassionate and Hardship Support package to ensure vulnerable students can continue their studies and don’t fall behind in their education.

We’ve identified the immediate need to provide assistance, so the package is available in two stages. Today, we’re releasing the first stage of funding – an emergency payment of up to $500.

This money can be used to cover essential living expenses, including IT equipment, books, or any other unexpected costs.

To be eligible for the emergency payment, you must:

  • Be currently in Australia and enrolled at a Monash University campus in Australia in semester one 2020 in:
    • An undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree – enrolled in at least six credit points or one unit, or
    • A higher degree by research.
  • Be experiencing hardship and at risk of discontinuing your course as a result of COVID-19
  • Be able to demonstrate intention to complete your course
  • Be able to demonstrate exceptional financial hardship as a result of COVID-19
  • Not be receiving Centrelink payments, such as Austudy, Youth Allowance
  • Not be deferring or taking intermission from your current enrolment.

From 14 April, we’ll open up access to additional payments:

  • A payment of up to $7000, or
  • A payment of up to $5000 available to students who have incurred reasonable costs in China, Iran or Australia associated with the original inbound bans on travel from these countries.

We'll release more information about the additional payments next week. If you have any questions about this initiative, please contact Monash Connect
