Everybody struggles with their mental health from time to time. Fortunately, there are many free and confidential support services available to you at Monash, and also from the wider community. Even talking to a friend, family member or work colleague as a first step can be helpful.
Seek help early if you’re struggling – early help-seeking behaviours can help you protect your mental wellness. If your mental health is negatively impacting your day-to-day life, consider seeking support from your friends, family, colleagues or a mental health professional. No issue is too big or too small to talk about.
All Monash staff are entitled to free and confidential mental health services. If you’re experiencing any of the following, you might want to access counselling services:
The fact that you have sought counselling – and anything you have spoken about in counselling – is private and will not be shared with anyone, including those from Monash.
Our counselling service is prohibited by law from sharing your information with anyone else. A mental health professional can only release your information to someone without your consent to protect yourself or others from serious harm (or if they have been sent a court order to do so).
EAP is a free, confidential counselling service provided by mental health professionals independent from Monash. Accessing EAP will not impact your employment in any way, and your employer cannot access any information regarding your sessions.
All Monash staff and their immediate family are entitled to six face-to-face or telehealth sessions for each issue they require assistance for. For more information on your EAP services entitlements, see our Employee Assistance Procedure.
To access EAP counselling services, call 1300 360 364 (Australia) or +61 2 8295 2292 (if overseas) to make an appointment with a counsellor through telehealth or in person. Office hours are 8am-6pm Monday to Friday.

You can see a GP to discuss your mental health (which you can choose to access through our University Health Services). A GP can determine if a Mental Health Care Plan may be helpful to you – this allows you to claim sessions with Medicare with a mental health professional.
Care Plans are available for people to receive the support they need. A GP may organise one for you if they suspect or diagnose you with a mental health condition.
If you need to see a mental health professional, your GP can recommend one to you. Alternatively, you can look up the national psychologist database and tell your GP who you want to see.
