Sir John Monash Medal for Outstanding Achievement

The Sir John Monash Medal recognises extraordinary academic achievement from an undergraduate student from each faculty. The medal is awarded to a student who:

  • has completed the academic requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) single or double degree and is eligible to graduate; and
  • is judged to have an excellent academic record; and
  • has demonstrated a significant commitment to advancing the University's goals of social justice, human rights and a sustainable environment.

Benefits and number of awards

One Sir John Monash Medal in awarded in engineering each year. The medal is awarded at the recipient's graduation ceremony and is included on their official University transcript.

Sir John Monash Medal eligibility

To be eligible a student must:

  • have completed their course and qualified for the award of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) no later than by the end of the academic year (students who complete their degree requirements over the summer period are considered to have qualified in the following academic year)
  • have a minimum overall WAM of 80% or above
  • have passed all units in their degree
  • have demonstrated a significant commitment, while at Monash, to advancing the University's goals of social justice, human rights and a sustainable environment
  • have not been a past recipient of a Sir John Monash medal.

A student completing a combined degree is not eligible to receive the award from both faculties. Nominations are made via the managing faculty. Engineering is the managing faculty for all its double degrees except for the double with Law.

Nominations and selection process

  1. A nomination can be made by the student (self nomination), a fellow student, any Monash staff member, or any member of the community by submitting the Sir John Monash Medal - Nomination form
  2. Nominations must also include a letter from the nominator explaining the reason for the nomination and a statement from the nominee addressing how he/she meets each of the eligibility criteria. Please also provide any supporting information that could be of use to the selection committee and permission from the nominee to have his or her academic records released to the selection committee
  3. The Selection Committee will make a recommendation to the Dean of Engineering. Where the selection committee deems more than one application to be equal in ranking, it may be necessary to require students to be interviewed
  4. The medal will be awarded at the student's graduation ceremony if attending, or, forwarded by mail if graduating in absentia. The award will be included on the recipients Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS)
  5. Nominations for the Sir John Monash Medal will open following the release of results for Semester 2 and will close on the second Monday in February.
